Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration

The mission of the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) is to work with Prairie people to build a viable agricultural industry, and to support a sound rural economy, healthy environment and a high quality of life. PFRA has decades of experience delivering agricultural, soil and water conservation programs in Manitoba. Experienced field staff are delivering stewardship projects to farmers and also assisting with information and technology transfer activities.

PFRA participates in provincial and regional coordination initiatives. Under the direction of the RHC and Regional Working Groups PFRA is developing the capability to provide benchmark data and program performance monitoring information that will be essential adjuncts to provincial and regional coordination activities. PFRA continues to assist MHHC in the delivery of the Riparian Stewardship Program and to work with producers on other riparian related projects.

Environment Canada

Environment Canada's vision is to see a Canada where people make responsible decisions about the environment, and the environment is thereby sustained for the benefit of present and future generations. In Manitoba, Environment Canada staff are engaged in various wildlife and ecosystem conservation and protection activities. These activities are mandated by various federal environmental, habitat and species protection legislation (see here), agreements and initiatives, and include the provision of scientific advice, compliance promotion and enforcement. Environment Canada participates in provincial and regional coordination initiatives, where appropriate, and delivers the Ecoaction Community Funding Program.

The following Environment Canada legislation is of particular relevance to the use of riparian areas:

  • the pollution prevention provisions of the Subsection 36(3) of the Fisheries Act (FA) and its regulations (deals with the deposit of deleterious substances into water frequented by fish);
  • the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and its regulations (deals with the understanding and prevention or reduction of the environmental and human health threats posed by toxic substances and other substances of concern);
  • the Species At Risk Act (deals with the protection and recovery of threatened or endangered wildlife species and their habitat);
  • the Migratory Birds Convention Act (deals with the conservation and protection of migratory birds and their habitat); and
  • the Canada Wildlife Act (deals with the authority for the acquisition of lands by the Minister of the Environment for the purposes of wildlife research, conservation, and interpretation).
